Why did I join The Union? I am a 65 year old female who has voted in every election since I was 18, but has never been particularly involved in politics otherwise. In the 2016 general election I voted for Hillary and my husband voted for Donald, much to my chagrin. (He thought that he would take on a more presidential demeanor once he was in office). As time went on, we were both horrified by his behavior.
As soon as I learned about The Lincoln Project I became a monthly supporter. I felt who better to fight Republicans but former Republicans? I also started listening to their podcast, and when I learned about The Union, I signed up to be a volunteer. As a member of the Baby Boomer generation, I see this fight for democracy as the existential fight of our time. My parents, members of The Greatest Generation, served in WW II to fight fascism and preserve democracy for our future. Now, it is our time to fight to preserve democracy for the future of our children and their children.
I remember how shocked, sickened and saddened I was when I learned that Donald Trump had won the election in 2016. I also remember how relieved and happy I felt, in 2020, when it was finally announced that Joe and Jill Biden would be moving into the White House. It is clearly the difference between a time of darkness and a return of the light.
If Donald Trump were to be allowed back in the White House, accompanying him would be Steve Bannon, Steven Miller, Michael Flynn, Roger Stone and a whole litany of sycophant fascist loyalists who will bend the knee at his beck and call. We cannot return to the darkness again. We cannot allow a 248 year American Experiment to die. I joined The Union to do my part in this existential fight of our time. I hope you will join me. You can go to The Union Action Center to find a partner that will best utilize your talents.
