When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for a free people to reaffirm the principles of democracy and to cast off the chains of aspiring autocracy, a decent respect for the liberties of mankind requires that we declare the causes which impel us to resist the rise of a would-be king.
We hold these truths to be self-evident:
That all people are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights, among these life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
That governments are instituted among the people, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
That whenever any leader seeks to subvert democracy, consolidate power, and place themselves above the law, it is the right and duty of the people to stand in opposition.
The history of Donald J. Trump, twice-impeached, four time indicted, and now once again seeking dominion over this Republic, is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an authoritarian rule under his name. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.
He Has Waged War Against Democracy
He incited a violent insurrection against the United States government on January 6, 2021, attempting to overturn a free and fair election, leading to death, destruction, and a lasting assault on the peaceful transfer of power.
He continues to spread the lie that the 2020 election was stolen, despite multiple court rulings and audits proving otherwise, eroding trust in democratic institutions and encouraging further political violence.
He has openly praised and promised pardons for those who attacked the Capitol, emboldening future acts of insurrection.
He Has Placed Himself Above the Law
He has been indicted for crimes including election interference, mishandling of classified documents, and obstruction of justice, yet proclaims himself immune from accountability.
He has used the courts to delay justice, filing frivolous appeals and claiming absolute immunity, setting a dangerous precedent that no leader should be above the law.
He has vowed to become a “dictator on day one” and to use the power of the state to punish those who oppose him, promising retribution instead of governance.
He Has Corrupted the Institutions of Government
He has signed an executive order extending White House control over independent agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission, Federal Trade Commission, and Securities and Exchange Commission, undermining their autonomy and subjecting them to political influence.
He has stacked the Supreme Court with justices who have dismantled rights for women, workers, and voters—gutting reproductive freedom, weakening labor protections, and rolling back affirmative action.
He has directed his party to obstruct legislation that would protect democracy, expand voting rights, and hold the powerful accountable.
He has turned Congress into a tool of personal vengeance, demanding allies launch baseless investigations into his opponents while ignoring real threats to national security and governance.
He Has Embraced and Enabled White Christian Nationalism
He has emboldened extremists who seek to impose religious rule on a secular nation, stripping away reproductive rights, LGBTQI+ protections, and racial equality.
He has aligned himself with violent militias and white supremacist groups, calling them “very fine people”and refusing to denounce their hateful ideology.
He has attacked the press as “the enemy of the people,” a tactic used by autocrats to silence dissent and control the narrative.
He Has Attacked Immigrants and the LGBTQI+ Community
He has revived plans for mass deportations, pledging to conduct the largest forced removals in U.S. history, targeting families, workers, and Dreamers who have lived in this country for decades.
He has called immigrants “poisoning the blood of our country,” invoking language reminiscent of fascist regimes to dehumanize vulnerable communities.
He has proposed detention camps for immigrants and endorsed extreme measures of border militarization, violating human rights and international law.
He has pledged to eliminate federal protections for LGBTQI+ Americans, banning transgender people from public life, restricting healthcare access, and revoking workplace discrimination protections.
He has backed book bans and school censorship to erase LGBTQI+ identities from public institutions, weaponizing moral panic to advance his authoritarian agenda.
He Has Betrayed the American Economy for His Own Gain
He has funneled taxpayer money into his own businesses, overcharging the Secret Service for hotel stays and directing foreign dignitaries to his properties for personal profit.
He has passed tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit billionaires and corporations while leaving the middle class behind, adding trillions to the national debt.
He has promised to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, stripping healthcare from millions, while offering no alternative for those who rely on it.
He has abandoned the American worker, waging a trade war that harmed farmers and manufacturers while failing to bring back the jobs he promised.
He Has Sought to Rule, Not Govern
He has declared that those who oppose him are not merely political rivals, but “vermin”to be eradicated, invoking the language of history’s worst despots.
He has expressed admiration for strongmen and dictators while undermining America’s democratic allies, attacking NATO, and emboldening authoritarians like Vladimir Putin.
He has embraced monarchical delusions, celebrating his image as a crowned ruler and reveling in the language of kingship, rejecting the foundational principle that no one in America is above the people.
He Has Endangered National Security
He has recklessly mishandled classified documents, keeping top-secret information at his private properties and obstructing efforts to recover them.
He has exposed intelligence sources and military secrets, prioritizing his ego over the safety of American operatives and allies.
He has encouraged foreign interference in U.S. elections, openly asking Russia and China for political assistance, compromising national sovereignty for personal gain.
We Refuse to Be Ruled by a King
In every stage of these oppressions, the people have petitioned for justice in the most humble terms. Our voices have been ignored, our votes attacked, our rights trampled upon. A leader who declares himself above the Constitution, above the courts, and above the people is no leader at all—he is a tyrant.
We, therefore, as free citizens of the United States, declare that we will resist all attempts to turn this democracy into a dictatorship. We will stand firm against the corruption of our institutions, the erosion of our freedoms, and the rise of authoritarianism.
To this end, we reaffirm our commitment to democracy, to the rule of law, and to the ideals upon which this nation was founded. And with firm resolve, we declare that in the United States of America, there shall be no king—only a government of, by, and for the people.
