From the start of his candidacy, I knew Trump was trouble. It was clear that he didn’t know much about our history or how the government functioned, and he did not care. He was like a bull in a china shop, and anyone trying to get him away from the breakables became a target for him causing him to move faster and act more crazy. I expected chaos and a clown car of incompetents from him. But in no way did I expect what happened.
As the daughter of a Revolutionary War historian and archeologist, patriotism was taught to me as I held 200 year old buttons that had once been on the coat of a man who had left home to fight for the creation of this country. I was taught reverence for our founders and framers when I walked the grounds of Washington's headquarters or his last winter encampment in the Hudson Valley.
I wrote postcards to help elect Joe Biden, but the events of January 6th left me horrified and shocked. That a president did not immediately denounce the actions of those that breached the Capitol was stunning. And terrifying.
Then I watched MAGA Republicans target women and LGBTQIA people, and I knew that I had no choice.
In 1776, men went to war to create this nation. I was going to have to do the same to play my part in saving it.
As a disabled, elderly person of low income, my options were limited. The Union showed me that the limitations didn't matter. I could serve my country with a cellphone.
So, that's what I do. I manage social media for the Washington social media pages of The Union. It doesn’t take much time, and I know I am helping to defend democracy.
Your patriotism may have gotten fired up differently than mine , but if you are concerned for our future as a nation, your help is very much needed and wanted. Join us. Jointheunion.us
