As we move closer to the November election, it becomes increasingly more important to reach voters to impress upon them the necessity, especially this year, of showing up to vote, either by mail-in ballot or in-person. One of the easiest ways to do this is by visiting The Action Center on The Union website. The Action Center is a virtual “marketplace” of volunteer opportunities for you to make a difference by encouraging others to vote for pro-democracy candidates.
The Action Center includes opportunities for you to help with phone banking, text banking, writing letters and/or postcards. You can participate in many of these activities regardless of your location. Organizations such as Field Team 6, RideShare2Vote, Mobilize and others offer the training you’ll need to participate in phone and text banking. If you enjoy talking and making person-to-person contact, phone banking is the way to go.
Personally, I prefer writing letters and postcards to voters who may vote infrequently. Organizations such as Vote Forward, Swing Left and Activate America will provide you with clear instructions and scripts for reaching voters. Vote Forward letters are usually non-partisan, explain why voting is important, and they also have some campaigns that focus on specific issues. Postcarding may highlight one or more specific candidates in various states. Creativity in postcarding is also allowed and encouraged, as long as the message is clearly legible.
If you prefer more in-person contact, you will appreciate that The Action Center provides info about local events and opportunities. You can find these listings using the “Filter” functionality on the page. Examples include the chance to register new voters or drive voters to the polls on election day.
There are myriad of ideas and ways to become involved in the 2024 election and to help defend democracy. It will take all of us!
