Defending Democracy One Action at a Time
It's not always easy to predict which actions will make a difference
Even though I’m spending a lot of time defending democracy by volunteering with The Union, sometimes I wonder if I’m really making a difference. Last night I had an encouraging conversation that eased my concern.
As a number of us were leaving our book group gathering, a friend said, “I saw your post on Facebook about driving people to the polls. My husband and I are interested in doing that. Do I just click on that link?”
I’d hardly remembered posting the link, but let her know that yes, if she clicks on the link, she’ll go directly to the RideShare2Vote web page that explains exactly what she needs to do to drive people to the polls. As the conversation continued, I remembered that her parents winter in Arizona, and she visits them regularly. Driving people to the polls in Arizona would be even more valuable than doing that in Colorado where we live. She and her husband were open to the idea of planning a November visit to Arizona and even seemed enthused about it!
As we were driving home, I thought to myself, “Maybe I am making a difference. One small step at a time.”
